Our Institution welcomed Professor Deborah Avant

On the invitation of our institute, Deborah Avant, professor of University of Denver and former President of the International Studies Association participated in panel discussions and lectures in Budapest and Szeged. During the first days of her visit Professor Avant shared her experiences on academic institution-building and the publishing procedures of international journals with the Institute Directors of the Faculty of Public Administration and International Studies of the University of Public Service and the Eötvös József Research Centre, as well as with those interested in American scientific activities. A report on the workshop can be read HERE.

The next day Professor Avant shared her experiences on the role, application, and utilization of science in public life at a panel discussion organized by the Institute for American Studies. In his opening speech our institute director, Balázs Mártonffy, drew the audience's attention to the importance of dialogue between science and public life, despite the impossibility of providing simple answers as a scientist. In the same vein Professor Avant emphasized the role of bridges in the relationship between science and public life in her keynote speech. The roundtable discussion following the lecture was attended by Deli Gergely, the rector of the University of Public Service, Ferenc Oberfrank, director of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, István Stumpf, emeritus professor of our Institute, and Bernát Török, director of the the Eötvös József Research Centre. A summary of the event can be found HERE, as well as an article by Tibor Sarnyai HERE.
